Over the past 13 years, the Sombers lab has mentored 57 undergraduates, representing a combined 156 semesters and 83 summers of supported research. These undergraduates have received NCSU research awards, and have won their own external funding to be first author presenters at national/international meetings. They have also been first author presenters at regional meetings, winning several awards for these presentations, including the I. M. Kolthoff Award sponsored by the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry. Many of these undergraduates have gone on to graduate school in chemistry or engineering programs, including one that won an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship to study at MIT.
